Study abroad in Australia

Hey, my name is Sophie. In August 2024, I started my dual study program in Aviation Management with Lufthansa. As part of this program, I was given the opportunity to spend a semester abroad – specifically at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. In the following article, I’ll take you along on the adventure of studying abroad and give you some insights into everyday life at the university here.

My time here began with the university’s “Orientation Week” (O-Week), which is designed to help all students find their way around campus and settle into university life. This week is structured quite similarly to the introductory week at the university in Frankfurt. The program also included various events intended to introduce us to life in Australia. From meet-ups aimed at improving language skills, to city tours and trying Australian snacks, all the way to the “Aussie Afternoon,” where we had the opportunity to experience Australian wildlife up close.

O-Week also marked the start of the Buddy Program, which was specifically developed for international students. Through the community and the assignment of a senior buddy, it provides support and guidance throughout the first few weeks.

But even beyond O-Week and the Buddy Program, the university places great importance on community and actively encourages this through a wide range of activities organized by the university.

For example, students have the opportunity to enjoy free breakfast on campus on certain days, or attend movie screenings where entire cinemas are rented out to watch the latest films together. There are also plenty of excursions to nearby attractions. Whether it’s a day trip to the Australian Zoo, where you can get to know many of Australia’s iconic animals, a tour of the film studios, a sailing trip to the islands off the coast of Brisbane, or an excursion to Byron Bay – there is definitely no shortage of things to do to make the most of your weekends. During the week, there are also activities such as quiz nights at a bar on campus, movie nights, and shared meals. Overall, university life here feels very community-oriented, with a strong focus on building connections and meeting new people.
